About Aerie
Aerie is a sweet foster dog learning the ropes of home life. She's still building her foundational skills โ including responding to her name โ but she's curious, food-motivated, and eager to bond.
What she's good at
- House-trained. Zero indoor accidents since arriving in foster.
- Calm alone โ explores, settles on the couch, no destruction (no furniture chewing).
- Calm overnight โ sleeps loose in the bedroom without incident.
- Noise-tolerant โ alerts but recovers fast; fine with thunder.
- Good with other dogs. Plays well with my mini schnauzer Koda; uses him as a social bridge to trust new people.
- Good with kids.
- Friendly with almost everyone now โ including men (occasional bark at a man standing up, but recovers fast).
- Knows sit, paw, touch, and down pretty consistently, plus a "crate" cue โ trainable, with strong food motivation.
- Loves her crate. Goes in on cue and rests there on her own โ a genuine safe space, not a punishment zone.
- No resource guarding around food, bowl, or chews.
- Loves running and fetching toys in the yard.
What she's working on
- Leash walking. Big improvement โ she walks now, with a predictable habit of stopping to stare at things (especially behind her down the street) before resuming.
- Handling desensitization โ face, paws, baths; slowly improving, now more willing to be picked up.
- Gentle play with small dogs โ her play-bites can land a little hard for a smaller companion; getting softer and rarer.
- Building toward closed-door crate time (already calm and voluntary with the door open).
- (Full progress on the training plan)
Meet Koda โ her foster roommate
Aerie lives with Koda, Matt's 5-year-old mini schnauzer (neutered male, ~20 lbs). Calm, friendly, curious about new dogs at first and then content to coexist. After Aerie's initial decompression, the two became good friends and play well together. Koda is also Aerie's social bridge to new humans โ when he runs up to greet a visitor, she follows and trusts faster. She has never hurt him in play. The takeaway for adopters: she does great with a calm, smaller canine companion, less proven with high-energy or larger dogs.
Good fit for an adopter whoโฆ
- Has patience for a dog who's mostly decompressed but still gains confidence with calm, low-key introductions
- Uses positive-reinforcement training (no corrections, no force)
- Can offer a calm household and consistent routine while confidence builds
- Either lives solo or has a calm, friendly dog (she does great with a smaller, mellow companion โ high-traffic dog households may overwhelm her)
- Has a yard or willingness to do daily backyard play while leash skills come along
- Kids welcome
